Abstract

Drug resistance and the distribution of R plasmids in Salmonella typhi strains were examined using 172 strains isolated from patients and healthy carriers in Chonnam area from April 1974 through March 1978.
Of the isolates, 84 strains(49.4%) were resistant to one or more of 9 antimicrobial agents tested. Resistance was mostly restricted to streptomycin(SM) and sulfisomidine(SU ), singly or doubly.
Eight strains were resistant to four or more drugs:.SM, SU, chloramphenicol (CP), tetracycline(TC), ampicillin(AP), cephaloridine(CE), kanamycin(KM), and gentamicin(GM). Nor was there any strain singly resistant to CP, TC, AP, KM, CE, or GM, No strain was resistant to nalidixic acid.
Of the 84 resistant strains, 9 strains(10, 7%) carried R plasmids. The five resistance patterns of R plasmid demonstrated were as follows: (SM TC)r, (AP KM)¢¥, (SM CP AP)¢¥, (SM CP AP SU)¢¥-, and (SM CP TC SU)r,
The transfer frequency of resistance from Salmonella typhi to Escherichia coli at 25¡ÆC was higher than at 37¡ÆC.
